WPC on a West-Facing Balcony: Dark or Light? Look at the Surface Temperature First

November 04, 2026

If you have a west-facing balcony, it can feel like an oven on summer afternoons. When choosing WPC decking, many people struggle with whether to pick a dark or light color. Beyond pure aesthetics, there is a significant difference in surface temperature between the two under direct sunlight. The conclusion is simple: for west-facing balconies, prioritize light colors. But don't expect light colors to be "cool"—the difference is between "too hot to step on" and "barely tolerable."

WPC thermal expansion

Dark colors absorb heat, and light colors reflect it—this is basic physics. Under prolonged sun exposure, dark WPC decking can reach surface temperatures significantly higher than light-colored boards. This directly affects how it feels underfoot and, more importantly, exacerbates thermal expansion and contraction. The higher the temperature, the greater the expansion. If the installation doesn't leave enough expansion gaps, it can easily cause the boards to buckle or warp. Therefore, choosing a light color effectively lowers surface temperature and reduces thermal stress.

However, when buying WPC decking, don't just look at color—pay attention to the surface texture. If your balcony gets intense afternoon sun, try to avoid deep-embossed textures. Dark colors combined with deep grooves absorb even more heat and trap dirt, making cleaning a nightmare. In contrast, choosing a co-extrusion WPC with a brushed finish or light wood grain not only visually cools the space but also uses the UV stabilizers in the co-extruded shell to resist harsh UV rays, preventing premature fading and aging.

WPC decking color selection

In summary, for a west-facing balcony, the color strategy for WPC decking should lean toward cool tones like light gray or off-white. During installation, make sure to tell the installer to leave sufficient expansion gaps, especially if installing during the hottest days of summer. Choose the right color and leave the right gaps, and your west-facing balcony will remain cool, comfortable, and beautiful.
