  • How to Reinforce WPC Decking for Heavy-Duty Bridges and Piers: Engineering Best Practices
    Oct 29, 2026
When the application of WPC (Wood-Plastic Composite) shifts from a standard residential patio to heavy-duty port piers, coastal boardwalks, or small bridge decks, the engineering requirements change dramatically.     One of the most common questions we hear from project managers and structural engineers is: Can WPC really withstand such heavy loads?   The answer is yes. However, to use WPC safely in heavy-duty projects, relying solely on the material's compressive strength is not enough. The real technical challenge lies in solving the tensile stress at the bottom of the board. Today, we are sharing the core reinforcement rules for heavy-duty WPC engineering, proven through years of market practice.   To solve the problem, you first need to understand the material. WPC has excellent compressive strength (withstand the downward pressure from foot traffic and heavy objects). However, in large-span applications, its tensile strength (the pulling force at the bottom) is relatively weaker.   When heavy vehicles or dense crowds press down on the center of a bridge deck, massive tensile stress is generated at the bottom of the board. If the underlying support or the board's structure is insufficient, the deck will bend.     Through long-term practical application in heavy-duty projects, the industry has developed three reinforcement solutions that balance performance and cost. These are the key factors we focus on when providing engineering selections for our global clients:   Solution 1: The "Golden Rule" of Bottom Reinforcement   In high-end heavy-duty engineering, compositing a single layer of GFRP (Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer) to the bottom of the WPC board is a highly recognized and efficient solution. Glass fiber has incredible tensile strength; bonding it to the tension side of the board significantly boosts overall load-bearing capacity.     Solution 2: The "Hardcore Choice" of Structural Priority   If you want to avoid the hassle and cost of GFRP, the most direct solution is to change the board's physical structure. For high-load piers and bridges, never use standard thin-walled hollow decking. You must choose high-density, fully solid WPC decking or ultra-thick-walled multi-hole profiles. These are extremely dense and distribute stress evenly, providing exceptional inherent bending and compressive resistance against heavy impacts.     Solution 3: The "Anchor" of Base Reinforcement   A great board means nothing if the underlying joists fail. In bridge and pier projects, traditional treated timber joists easily rot and break, while metal joists are prone to rust. The perfect "base" is a fully solid WPC joist. It offers immense load-bearing capacity and superior screw-holding power, forming a perfect "all-WPC anti-corrosion load-bearing system" with the decking above.     SenLai: Your One-Stop Provider for Heavy-Duty Load-Bearing Solutions   As a direct manufacturer, we do not recommend that clients blindly experiment or over-spend on expensive materials for heavy-duty projects. • Quality Testing Standards for Wood-Plastic Composites (Part 2)
    Oct 23, 2026
Hello everyone, In our previous article, we revealed the first three of the 6 core indicators used to judge WPC product quality: Pressure Strength, Falling Ball Impact, and 72-Hour Boiling Water Absorption. If you missed it, feel free to check our previous post.   Today, we are going to tackle the remaining three "hidden levels": Bending Creep, Buoyancy Density, and Screw Holding Power.     (Fun fact: To prepare for the bending creep test, I carried out a huge pile of gym weights. My colleagues thought I was going to work out, but I was actually testing the durability of our new boards!)   As always, before any testing begins, the samples must be placed in a constant temperature and humidity chamber at 23°C and 50% humidity for 24 hours to eliminate environmental variables.   1. 24-Hour Bending Creep: Testing Long-Term Toughness The term "bending creep" might sound highly technical. Simply put, it means forcibly bending the WPC board to deform it. However, this test isn't about breaking the board. It's about keeping the board in a deformed state for a long time, then releasing the force to see how well it recovers. This directly tests the board's toughness and long-term stability. If a board is prone to sagging or warping under prolonged pressure and sun exposure, it means its creep resistance is poor. Since human force cannot maintain constant pressure for 24 hours, we need specialized equipment.   How to Test:   Place the treated board on the bending creep testing machine. Place a digital dial indicator at the bottom to record the initial value (d0). Place weights one by one onto the sensor platform until the machine screen reaches 750N, and record the dial indicator value (d1). Maintain this pressure for exactly 24 hours. After 24 hours, remove the weights one by one. Observe the board's recovery. Once stabilized, record the dial indicator value (d2).   Standard: D represents the flexural creep recovery rate; $d_1$ is the dial indicator reading after the specimen has been subjected to a load (weight) for 24 hours; $d_2$ is the dial indicator reading after the load has been removed following the 24-hour period; and $d_0$ is the initial dial indicator reading taken before the load was applied. The final value is the average of three repeated tests. According to the national standard, the recovery rate must be 75% or greater.     2. Buoyancy Density Test: Weighing the "Real Material" This test is quite straightforward but requires strict conditions, especially regarding water quality.   How to Test:   First, cut a small 50mm x 50mm sample from the WPC board and weigh its dry mass in air using a high-precision balance. Next, prepare a bottle of pure industrial distilled water. (Pro Tip: Never use tap water or water with impurities, as they will affect the accuracy of the density measurement.) Completely immerse the sample in the distilled water to observe its floating/sinking state, gently removing any air bubbles.   Finally, use precision instruments to measure the sample's apparent mass in water and calculate its actual physical density (g/cm³) using Archimedes' principle. The test is typically repeated to ensure the result meets the standard requirement of ≥0.75 g/cm³.   Standard: High-quality WPC boards, due to good extrusion processes and dense internal structures, have high density. The national standard requires the density to be ≥ 0.75 g/cm³. If a board floats entirely on the water like foam, it means it has been over-foamed and its density is substandard. Such boards will have significantly lower load-bearing and impact resistance.   3. Screw Holding Power: Determining Installation Stability & Wind Resistance This test aims to check if it's convenient for installers to drive screws and, more importantly, if the screws hold firmly.   Let me give you a vivid analogy: Imagine planting a tree. To prevent it from being blown over by the wind, you need to check if the soil is firm enough.      The soil is our WPC board, and the tree is the screw. Loose screws will severely impact the board's lifespan. While installation skills may vary, as manufacturers, we can't just blame the installers. To avoid disputes, the screw holding power test is essential.   How to Test:   The equipment used here is the same testing machine as the pressure strength test, but instead of pressing down, it pulls up.   Prepare a small square piece of board. Mark the center point and fix a screw into the center.    Place the board into a metal box with the screw pointing upwards, protruding through a slot in the top.Use the machine's clamp to grip the screw. Start the machine to slowly apply upward force.Continue until the screw is pulled out, and check the peak force value displayed on the monitor.     Standard: Currently, there is no unified national standard for this specific metric in China. Our factory strictly follows the Korean KS standard, requiring the value to reach Hollow boards are required to be greater than 400 N, and solid boards are required to be greater than 780 N.     Conclusion That wraps up the 6 key indicators for evaluating WPC material quality. The standards and data shared in this article are based on our factory's practical experience and are intended to help you better understand WPC material testing and quality evaluation.   Still have questions about a specific test? • Quality Testing Standards for Wood-Plastic Composites(Part 1)
    Oct 29, 2026
As we all know, when sourcing WPC materials, quality is just as important as price. So, how exactly do you judge the quality of a WPC board? Looking at the surface is simply not enough.   There are dozens of quality standards for WPC products: strength, toughness, water absorption, flame retardancy, anti-corrosion, anti-oxidation, formaldehyde emission, and so on. As a sourcing manager, you can't buy dozens of expensive machines to test all these. Professional factories will regularly send products to third-party testing agencies for certification. However, there are 6 core indicators that must be tested for every batch right here in our own factory lab.   Today, we are going to reveal the most hardcore of the 6 core indicators: Pressure Strength, Water Absorption (72-hour boiling), and Falling Ball Impact. Let's see how a legitimate factory uses these "simple and brutal" methods to filter out 70% to 80% of inferior boards on the market!   Professional Tip: Before testing, professional factories place samples in a constant temperature and humidity chamber at 23°C and 50% humidity for 24 hours to eliminate environmental variables.   1. Pressure Strength Test: The Lifeline of Load-Bearing and Safety The most important indicator of a board is its strength, which directly determines the load-bearing capacity and lifespan of the decking outdoors.   How to Test:   Set the spacing of the bottom joists on the machine (usually 35cm; for example, the Korean KS standard is 40cm).   Place the cut WPC board on the joists. Ensure the board is not offset by measuring both ends with a ruler, guaranteeing even stress distribution. Operate the machine to lower the pressure head slowly. The national standard requires the contact area of the pressure head to be 51mm x 51mm (factories usually prepare different sizes for various country standards).   Observe the peak force value on the screen the moment the board breaks.   Standard: The national standard requires a compressive strength of 3400N. However, high-quality factory products far exceed this: Hollow decking typically reaches over 3800N, while solid decking can exceed 4400N.   Sourcing Tip: Always ask the factory for a pressure strength test report when sourcing. If they can't even provide this, you need to be very careful before placing an order!   2. 72-Hour Boiling (Water Absorption): The Confidence to Resist Extreme Weather WPC decking is mainly used outdoors, where it inevitably faces extreme environments like heavy rain and standing water. If the water absorption rate is too high, long-term rain exposure will cause the board to swell and destroy its structural stability.   How to Test: The method is quite straightforward. Place the treated board directly into a boiling water tank, set the temperature to 98°C, and boil it continuously for 72 hours. After taking it out, measure its weight and compare it to the pre-boiling weight to calculate the water absorption rate.   Standard: The national standard stipulates that the water absorption rate of WPC boards must not exceed 1%. Boards that pass this test can easily handle ordinary outdoor rain without any issues.     3. Falling Ball Impact Test: Testing Surface Hardness and Durability Outdoor decking inevitably faces falling objects. The simplest way to test if a board is durable is to "smash" it.   How to Test:   Securely fix the treated board onto the test bench.   Raise the drop point of a steel ball to a height of 1.75 meters.   Turn off the magnetic switch and let the steel ball fall naturally, hitting the board's surface heavily.   Check the damage on the board's surface.   Standard: The national standard requires the damaged surface area to be less than or equal to 12mm without obvious penetration damage. Truly high-quality boards will show almost no visible damage after such a heavy impact.   Conclusion & Preview That wraps up the three most hardcore indicators for today: Pressure Strength, Water Absorption, and Falling Ball Impact. Although the testing methods seem simple and brutal, they act as a "magic mirror" that instantly filters out 70% to 80% of inferior boards on the market.   As for the remaining three—Buoyancy Density Test, 24-Hour Bending Creep, and Screw Holding Power—they focus more on the board's "long-term stability" and "installation friendliness." Some manufacturers dare to show you strength reports, but might not dare to show you creep data, because it directly determines whether your outdoor decking will collapse and deform two years from now.   Stay tuned for our next article, where we will take you directly to these three "hidden levels" and reveal how factories control long-term quality. If you are interested, follow us, and let's see the real deal next time!

  • Why Does WPC Decking Expand and Contract, and What Should You Do? Leaving Expansion Gaps at Installation Is Critical
    Oct 16, 2026
Lately a lot of you business owners have been messaging me with questions about installing WPC decking - how should the joists be laid? Does the ground need levelling? How long should the boards be cut so they are easy to transport? How much of a gap should be left between boards? And on and on...   Next, I will answer these questions one by one.   Today let us talk about the most easily overlooked problem in WPC decking installation - and the one with the most serious consequences: Thermal expansion and contraction.   Many people install WPC decking and then, after a summer or a winter, find the boards bulging and the edges curling up  - some even hear a "creak, creak" sound.   So whose fault is it? Today will make it clear! First, a basic fact: WPC (wood-plastic composite), although far more stable than pure plastic, still expands and contracts with heat. In summer heat the boards expand; in winter cold they contract. How much movement is that? Generally, for every metre of length, a temperature difference of 40 degrees produces about 2 to 4 mm of movement at each end. That does not sound like much - but if you are laying 6-metre boards, that is 1 to 2 cm across both ends combined. If there is no gap, where is it supposed to go? Up is the only way - it bulges.   So when installing WPC decking, the core rule is one sentence: wherever a gap is needed, not a single millimetre can be spared.   So exactly where do you need gaps? Let me walk you through the key points:   First, between the ends of the boards and the wall. This is the one most easily overlooked. The decking cannot butt straight up against the wall - you must leave an expansion gap of at least 10 to 15 mm. This gap will be covered later by an edge trim, so it does not affect the look, but it is the decking's "breathing channel."      Second, the end-to-end joints between boards. If several boards are joined end to end, leave a gap of 3 to 5 mm at the joint as well. Some installers, aiming for a neat look, fit the joints perfectly tight. It looks great at the time, but by summer it bulges.       Third, between the decking and fixed objects. Around threshold stones, columns and pipes, for example - anywhere the decking cannot expand and contract freely, you need a gap. Remember one principle: the decking may be locked in one direction only; every other direction must be left free to move.       Here I need to call out a few common misconceptions: Misconception 1: The narrower the gap, the better it looks. Wrong. Good looks are temporary; bulging is permanent. Save on the gap and the repair bill later will far outweigh the few extra millimetres.     Misconception 2: With co-extrusion WPC, you do not need gaps. Co-extrusion WPC is indeed more stable, but "more stable" does not mean "it will not expand and contract." The same gaps are still required - the movement may just be slightly smaller.      Misconception 3: You can leave smaller gaps when installing in winter. Quite the opposite. In winter the temperature is low and the decking is in its contracted state, so you need to leave even bigger gaps at installation, because it still has to expand in summer. Generally, a winter installation needs 2 to 3 mm more gap than a summer one.      To sum up: thermal expansion and contraction is a law of physics, not a quality problem. Leaving expansion gaps at installation is not cutting corners - it is giving the decking a "way out." Remember one line: leave enough gap and the decking will not bulge for ten years; skimp on the gap and you will be redoing the job within a year.

  • What is WPC co-extruded decking?
    Jul 19, 2024
What is WPC co-extruded decking?   As WPC production processes continue to develop, new products are also being developed. A new type of product called co-extruded WPC has gradually come into people's view.   What is co-extrusion technology?   Co-extrusion is a manufacturing process used to make multi-layer wood plastic composite (WPC) deck products. In a co-extrusion system, two or more different plastics or composite materials are extruded simultaneously to form a single unified profile with different layers. Due to the addition of new processes, co-extruded products are also called second-generation products.         What does WPC co-extruded decking consist of?   Co-extruded WPC decks are composed of multiple layers that are fused together during the extrusion process. Typically, these layers include: Surface layer: The surface of the co-extruded WPC deck is wrapped with plastic compounds, usually in full-wrapped and half-wrapped forms. The surface mainly provides enhanced scratch resistance, stain resistance and impact resistance. Core layer: The middle layer that makes up the majority of the profile is composed of standard wood plastic composite materials. This provides core strength, stability. The co-extrusion process enables manufacturers to design decks that combine the best characteristics of each material into a single, cohesive board. This gives WPC decks superior durability, aesthetics, and performance characteristics compared to traditional single-ply composites.     What is the difference between Co-extruded WPC decks and  ?   Layer Construction: Co-extruded WPC decks have a multi-layer construction, typically with a wear layer, core layer, and backing layer. Standard WPC decks are single-ply, homogenous wood-plastic composites.   Performance Characteristics: Co-extruded decks have enhanced performance due to the specialized attributes of each layer. The surface wrap layer provides excellent scratch, stain, and impact resistance. The core layer provides structural integrity and dimensional stability. Standard WPC decks have more uniform performance characteristics without specialized layered designs.   Design Flexibility: Co-extruded decks allow for greater design customization, as different layers can be designed with unique colors, textures, and visual patterns. Standard WPC decks have a more limited aesthetic range, as the appearance is primarily determined by a single composite material. Manufacturing Process: Co-extruded decks are produced using a more complex co-extrusion process that incorporates multiple materials simultaneously. Standard WPC decks are manufactured using a simpler mono-extrusion process. Cost: Co-extruded decks are generally more expensive to manufacture due to the additional complexity of the co-extrusion process and specialized materials. Standard WPC decks tend to be more cost-effective because they require less intensive production methods. In summary, co-extruded WPC decks offer enhanced performance, design flexibility, and more complex structures than standard single-ply WPC decks, but are more expensive to manufacture.      Senlai offers co-extrusion and regular composite decking Co-extruded WPC decking It is a co-extruded WPC decking with a high performance 4-sided polymer wrapping layer to prevent fading, scratching and chipping. Therefore, a longer service life can be guaranteed. This co-extruded decking has a hollow board type and has the advantages of fire resistance, weather resistance, and super anti-slip, and is widely used in public places.   Regular composite decking It is the first generation of WPC laminate decking and is considered one of the most economical and good quality WPC decking. It is designed to be durable and beautiful, perfect for swimming pools, balconies, universities, hospitals, gyms and parks. You can customize the size and color of the decking.

  • How to better maintain WPC DIY tiles
    Apr 04, 2024
How to better maintain WPC DIY tiles ?     WPC DIY tiles are a composite floor made of wood powder and plastic particles. They are usually 30cm*30cm in size. Compared with traditional solid wood floors, they are more durable and waterproof. But this does not mean that we can use it casually, any product needs to be cherished. WPC DIY tiles are easily affected by sharp objects and heavy objects such as high heels, sofas and other daily necessities. In some cases, wet weather or pet paws can also pose a threat to WPC DIY tiles. Here are some suggestions to help you better care for your WPC DIY tiles.   Part 1 USE SOME PROPS   Ⅰ Place a welcome mat at the door When we come home from the outdoors, never enter the house with your shoes on. Dirt, gravel, and sand may be hidden in the gaps of the soles, and these hard objects can easily scratch WPC DIY tiles. Placing a mat at the door can effectively prevent this from happening. It will remind everyone who enters the house to change shoes or clean the soles at the door.   Ⅱ Lay carpet under the heavy objects There are often many heavy objects in your house, such as sofas, cabinets, etc. If you accidentally move these heavy objects, it will leave traces on the tiles, which is very distressing. Laying carpet under these heavy objects can effectively reduce scratches and avoid heavy objects from scratching and damaging WPC DIY tiles.   Ⅲ Install protective pads on the bottom of furniture Furniture such as tables and chairs have sharp feet. In daily use, we may move these furniture and accidentally leave marks on the tiles. Foot pads will help prevent damage to the tiles from the base of furniture or other sharp objects. It is recommended to buy a protective pad with glue on one side, which can be directly stuck to the bottom of the furniture without the need to apply glue yourself.   Remember to check the protective pads you install regularly. The protective pad may fall off due to the glue losing its stickiness or the protective pad may be severely worn and lose its protective function.         IV Use rubber wheels instead of plastic wheels We like to use a chair with wheels at the computer desk in the study. Not only do hard plastic wheels not slide as smoothly, they can also cause a lot of damage to the tiles. From now on, remove the plastic casters from your chairs and replace them with rubber wheels.         Part 2 TREAT YOUR WPC DIY TILES GENTLY   Ⅰ Lift instead of drag When moving furniture, please do not drag or push it forcefully. If you are strong enough, lift it up and move it. If you can't do it alone, ask friends or family for help.         Ⅱ Use a small trailer to transport furniture If you feel that it is too strenuous to carry heavy furniture all the time, you can buy a small trailer, lift the furniture onto the small trailer, and then move the small trailer, which can save a lot of effort.         It is worth noting that when buying a small trailer, try to buy a small trailer with rubber wheels and pay attention to its load capacity. The items you need to transport cannot exceed its load capacity.   Ⅲ Trim your pet’s nails The long claws of pets can cause damage to WPC DIY tiles. Cats have the habit of sharpening their claws, and dogs have the habit of digging holes. If there is no special place for them to move around, you need to trim your pet's nails in time.         Part3 HOW TO CLEAN WPC DIY TILES   Ⅰ Do not mop the floor with a mop that is too wet Cleaning tiles with a mop that is too wet can cause excess moisture to seep underneath, making tiles brittle if they are soaked in water for a long time in a humid environment. If you have higher requirements for cleaning, you can purchase a cleaning spray specially designed for floors and wipe the floor with a cloth or dry mop.         Ⅱ Do not use a vacuum cleaner with a hard brush head Please do not use vacuum cleaners with rotating brush heads or hard brush heads on WPC DIY tiles. High-speed rotating brush heads can scratch the floor. It is worth noting that before using the vacuum cleaner, please check the following vacuum cleaner wheels to ensure that there is no dirt or grit hidden in the middle.         If you need more professional content about product parameters and knowledge, please click Contact Us.

  • How to calculate the price of WPC decking?
    Mar 06, 2024
Practical Tips! How to calculate the price of WPC decking?   When buying home decoration and building materials, what do you pay most attention to? Is it the appearance? Yes, who doesn’t want his garden to be beautiful? quality? This is also important, cracks in the ground feel terrible. brand? Well, it sounds reasonable. Products from big brands may be better. But no matter what your preferences are, there is one factor you can never get around: price. (Of course, if your name is on the world's richest list, just pretend I didn't say it) Next, I will tell you the factors that affect the price of wood plastic decking and a simple price calculation method, so that you can be mentally prepared before making a decision.     Ⅰ. What are the factors that affect the price of wood plastic decking? 1. Material quality: The price of wood-plastic decking is directly related to the quality of its materials. Wood-plastic decking is mainly composed of wood powder, plastic particles and various additives. High-quality raw materials are usually more expensive. For example, there is a significant difference between high-quality plastic particles and low-quality plastic particles. High-quality ones tend to have higher strength. and flexibility, not easy to bend, deform and break. The price of plastic particles of different qualities can often vary by hundreds of dollars per ton; the same is true for wood powder and additives. Products of different qualities differ in color, durability, waterproofness and corrosion resistance. , antioxidant properties are very different. (Senlai has close cooperation with raw material factories and insists on using high-quality raw materials.) 2. Weight: The weight of the deck is another important factor that affects the price of the product. Sometimes you will see that the decks are obviously the same style and the same texture, but their prices are different. This is related to the weight of the deck per meter. , the same length and heavier deck requires more materials, so its price will be higher. 3. Brand and Manufacturer: Wood plastic decking from well-known brands and quality manufacturers usually has higher prices. This is because these brands/manufacturers have a higher reputation in the market and usually provide better product quality and after-sales service. The extra money you spend may be reflected in the service.   4. Design and style: Different designs and styles will also have an impact on the price of wood plastic flooring. Some special designs, patterns or textures may increase the cost of producing the flooring, thereby increasing the price. For example, the price of imitation wood-grained decking will be higher than that of straight-grained decking, and the price of co-extruded decking will be higher than that of ordinary conformal decking. White decks will cost more than other deck colors because white paint is the most expensive.   Ⅱ. The wood-plastic deck price calculation method that can be learned in one step The price of wood-plastic decking is usually measured in square meters. If you are using it yourself or as a construction team, you only need to know the area you need, and then multiply the area by the price per square meter. For example, if you have a garden covering an area of 120 square meters and need to deck it, and the price per square meter of decking is US$10, then multiply 120 by 10 to get a price of US$1,200. Isn’t it simple? It is worth noting that laying a deck usually involves losses, so we strongly recommend that you add 8% more when calculating the required area. After all, no one wants to spend extra transportation costs. More is better than less, right?       The next step is to calculate the required accessories. The auxiliary materials of wood plastic decking include keels, edge strips, screws, buckles, etc. The prices of these excipients vary and we cannot be clear here, but we can have a rough estimate of the quantities they require.   See table below.   Per square meter Keel Edge Banding Strip Screws And Buckles Needed per square meter 3 meters Measure according to actual situation 20 sets   From this we can conclude that if you buy a 100-square-meter wood-plastic deck, you will need 300 meters of keel and 2,000 sets of screw buckles. (The edge banding strip needs to be measured based on your actual circumference) Isn't it very simple? So at the end of the article, here is a debut question to test you. Assuming you have a budget of US$2,000, how many square meters of wood-plastic straight grain flooring can you buy? (A joke)   If you have any questions, please click Contact Us to contact the customer service of Senlai New Materials Co., Ltd.

  • How to choose between hollow WPC deck and solid WPC deck?
    Nov 02, 2023
How to choose between hollow WPC deck and solid WPC deck?             In our real life, we often face various choices, such as whether to choose a hollow WPC deck or a solid WPC deck. After installation, there is almost no difference in appearance.       Therefore, many customers who choose WPC decking will ask a question, why should I choose hollow decking instead of solid decking (Some people also ask the opposite question)       Overall, their biggest differences are strength and weight and most people are concerned about price. Next, I will go into detail about the core between the two decks and how to choose in different circumstances.         The core differences between the two decks Structure       Hollow WPC flooring has a hollow structure inside the WPC composite material, similar to a hollow tube. They generally have lighter weight and lower density. In contrast, solid WPC floors have no hollow structure and are solid as a whole, with higher density.   Sound insulation       Solid WPC decks absorb the sound of walking or running better than hollow WPC decks.   Durability       In most cases, solid WPC decking is more durable than hollow WPC decking. Solid decks can handle higher weights, and you don’t have to worry about sharp stilettos and falling heavy objects at all. Solid means higher quality, but that doesn’t mean that solid WPC decking is the best choice in every situation.   Price       In terms of price, solid WPC decks are naturally much more expensive. In terms of production, solid decks require far more materials than hollow decks.      Expansion and Contraction       Hollow WPC flooring has lighter weight and good thermal expansion and contraction properties. Due to their hollow structure, they respond more flexibly to temperature changes and are less prone to deformation and cracks. The solid      WPC deck will be even more affected when faced with huge temperature differences. If you live in a country or region with large temperature differences throughout the seasons, we would recommend you choose a hollow deck.   Install       Under the category of installation, it is worth breaking it down into several small points.       1. Difficulty in handling: For a WPC deck of the same length, the hollow deck may be one-third lighter than the solid deck. Therefore, whether you do it yourself or hire a construction team to install it, the transportation cost of hollow WPC decking is much lower.       2. It is easier to lay wires: Many people like to install lights or other electronic devices in their gardens, which will make their yards look cooler. It's much easier to achieve these goals and run wires for speakers or lights using hollow composite board because you can run the wires through the board very easily.         3. Edge strips: Most people don’t want to see the holes at both ends of the hollow deck. This not only worsens the overall appearance of the deck, but also allows many insects and garbage to hide inside. Therefore, the last step in the installation of a hollow WPC deck must be to install edge strips to seal the hole. A solid WPC deck can eliminate this step.         How to choose?       Choosing hollow WPC flooring or solid WPC flooring should be based on the following considerations:             Application Location: First consider where the floor will be used. For light-duty residential interior use, such as bedrooms, living rooms or offices, hollow core WPC flooring may be a suitable choice. For commercial areas, public spaces or high-traffic areas such as shops, restaurants, corridors and public spaces, solid WPC floors are often more suitable due to their greater strength and durability.         Budget Considerations: Budget is one of the important factors in choosing the type of flooring. In general, hollow WPC floors are more economical and affordable than solid WPC floors. If you are looking to get WPC composite flooring within a lower cost range, then hollow core WPC flooring may be a more suitable choice. However, with sufficient budget, solid WPC flooring may offer better quality and performance.         Life Expectancy: It’s also important to consider the life expectancy of your flooring. Solid WPC flooring generally has a longer service life due to its sturdy construction and higher density. If you want your floor to withstand years of use and wear without being easily deformed or damaged, solid WPC flooring may be a more reliable choice.           Environmental Factors: Environmental factors of the flooring also need to be considered. If the floor will be exposed to moisture, moisture, or high temperatures, solid WPC flooring may be more suitable because its denser structure is better able to resist the effects of these environments. Hollow core WPC floors may be more susceptible to moisture or warping in these conditions.   Summarize       Although the overall quality of solid decks is stronger than hollow decks, this does not mean that there is a problem with the quality of hollow decks. The interior of a hollow deck is usually made of arches, making it very strong. You never have to worry about whether you can accommodate heavy furniture. You can place tables, chairs, and a barbecue grill in your garden. Even if you encounter a severe snowstorm, you don’t have to worry. You can sit by the heater in the living room and watch the snow outside the window. The deck can fully support the weight of the snow.       In fact, hollow WPC decks are more popular with ordinary households in the market, and their material costs, transportation costs, and installation costs are much lower than solid decks. In any case, it is unrealistic to talk about issues without price.         Each of SENLAI's WPC deck products has excellent strength and cost-effectiveness. Therefore, if you are looking for the best solution for garden decoration, you can click on our product interface to select, or contact us, and we will give you the most professional answer.

  • Will WPC decking expand and contract?
    Oct 19, 2023
Will WPC decking expand and contract ?             WPC decking will expand and contract, not as much as regular wood, but it still happens.       Composite decks are usually made from a mixture of wood powder, plastic particles and other additives. Due to the high plastic content (about 30%), they will respond to changes in temperature and have different coefficients of thermal expansion and contraction. When temperatures rise, composite decking expands, and when temperatures drop, they shrink. Although composite decks expand and contract relatively little, they may experience some degree of thermal expansion and contraction during extreme temperature changes or exposure to sunlight.         What affects the expansion and contraction of WPC decking?             1. Temperature changes: Thermal expansion and contraction of composite decks are mainly caused by temperature changes. The material expands when the temperature increases and contracts when the temperature decreases. If you live in a country or region with a large temperature difference between day and night, please be sure to pay attention to this.             2. Choice of deck color: The choice of different colors will also have different effects on the expansion rate of the deck. This involves a very basic physics knowledge. The darker the object, the more heat it absorbs. The same is true for outdoor decks. If you live in an area where the sun shines a lot, but you really like a dark deck, you have to consider it. For example, install some sunshade items on the deck, such as pergolas, parasols, etc. . Of course, there are other ways to prevent thermal expansion and contraction, which we will answer in detail below.             3. Water accumulation: No matter what material it is, it will change if it is soaked in water for a long time, and the same is true for WPC decks.         Scientific installation is the most important method to slow down the expansion and contraction of WPC decking             Although expansion and contraction are inevitable, there are ways to reduce its deformation.       Installation is a crucial part of the entire WPC deck use process. It can be said that about 60% of the problems that occur in the later use of WPC decks are caused by irregular installation methods (such as deformation, warping, cracking, etc.).       Like common building facades in real life, they are composed of different materials, such as bricks, stone or metal sheets. These materials have different thermal expansion and contraction coefficients under temperature changes, so design and construction measures need to be taken to deal with this difference. For example, stresses and deformations in exterior wall materials caused by temperature changes can be reduced through the use of expansion joints, suitable connecting and fastening systems, and suitable thermal insulation materials.       The same is true for our WPC decks. During the installation process, gaps need to be left. These gaps are usually left when installing screws or clamps to allow a certain amount of movement space. Additionally, specially designed telescoping materials can be used to fill gaps to protect the deck and provide better weather resistance. If it is not standardized, it will cause damage to the deck itself:       1. Deformation and warping: Without enough space for expansion, composite decking may deform and warp when thermally expanded, resulting in uneven surfaces and structural problems.       2. Cracks: If the composite deck is restricted and cannot expand and contract freely when the temperature changes, it may cause cracks on the surface, affecting the appearance and service life.       As for how big a gap needs to be left, we can give a rough range:   Outdoor Temperature Gap Width Below 4℃ 6mm Between 4℃-25℃ 3mm Above 26℃ 1mm     SENLAI’s WPC products have been proven to expand and contract less than other composite materials         Compared with other products, SENLAI has smaller fluctuations, mainly for two reasons:       1. SENLAI can customize the length and size of the deck according to your needs, whether it is 3 meters or 4.8 meters in length, it can be cut. This not only makes storage and installation more flexible and convenient, but also allows it to handle any climate with less fluctuation. On the premise of ensuring quality, reducing the length of a single deck can reduce the degree of deck changes.         2. SENLAI can adjust the formula ratio of raw materials according to the differences in climate in various countries and regions. When exposed to direct sunlight and extreme low temperatures, a larger plastic ratio will lead to greater expansion and contraction. Adjusting the recipe ratios of raw materials before starting can largely prevent this from happening. You can tell our staff the country and region you are in, and we will provide a customized solution after analyzing the local climate environment.

  • Why is WPC decking more expensive than wood?
    Oct 09, 2023
Why is WPC decking more expensive than wood?             It is difficult to draw a conclusion on whether WPC decking or wood decking is better. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some people like the environmental friendliness and durability of WPC decking, but others prefer the authentic feel of wood decking. There is no better one, only the one that suits you better.       But what is certain is that the price of WPC decking is higher than that of ordinary wood decking. Generally speaking, the price of WPC decking is more than 2 times the price of ordinary wood.         Raw materials are the biggest difference       The main reason why WPC decks are more expensive is that the raw materials required are more complex. WPC decks are composed of plastic particles, wood powder and additives. The process from recycling to processing of these raw materials is long and complex, and these costs are far greater than the cost of felling the wood. This is especially true in some countries and regions with rich timber resources.   The difference between production processes       The manufacturing process of WPC deck requires the use of advanced technology and equipment, including a series of processes such as granulation, extrusion, and polishing. Simply put, it involves gluing layers of materials together, applying thin layers of wood, texturing and decorative treatments, etc. The application of these processes and technologies increases manufacturing costs and also results in higher prices for composite flooring.       Relatively speaking, the production process of ordinary wooden floors is much simpler.         Consideration of later maintenance costs       Usually when buying a car, we should not only consider the cost of purchase at the time, but also need to consider the cost of subsequent repairs and maintenance. For example, a BMW car that is more than 10 years old may cost only a few thousand dollars, but it may have problems after you buy it home, and the cost of one repair may have exceeded the original price of the car.       The same goes for our outdoor decking, when comparing wood to WPC decking, pricing based solely on what it is today is unreasonable. Ordinary wood faces maintenance problems. Ordinary outdoor wood decks require repainting and surface layer protection.       Take repainting as an example. Assume that a wooden outdoor deck needs to be used for 15 years. A 4-liter bucket of deck paint costs about $90. Assuming that the paint is repainted once a year, and each repaint consumes 2 liters of paint, then the outdoor deck needs to be replaced. It previously cost about $675 to maintain, not including surface coating and time costs.       WPC decks don’t have this problem. You don’t have to spend time and money to maintain it. After this calculation, does the price difference in the initial purchase seem insignificant?         Durability considerations       WPC outdoor decks are waterproof, sun-proof, and anti-corrosion. Their service life can usually reach more than 15 years, while wooden decks usually do not last 15 years. In fact, if you take good care of it, it can reach more than 10 years. alright.       Buying and installing it again is a considerable expense, and I believe no one wants to see their garden deck needing to be demolished and rebuilt.   Better user experience       Taking the car example again, no one walks into their local car dealership expecting to buy a brand new Porsche 911 sports car for a few thousand dollars. Such luxury cars are more expensive because they have higher value, better performance, and can give you a better driving experience.       Same goes for WPC decking, our SENLAI WPC decking uses the latest composite building material technology and is therefore more expensive than wood. WPC was born to bring people a better outdoor deck experience.

  • Will critters damage WPC decks?
    Sep 22, 2023
Will critters damage WPC decks?             Our WPC decking is often used in outdoor gardens. In addition to the wind and sun, there is also a threat that is easily overlooked, and that is the small animals from the jungle. Next, imagine two scenarios. 1. On a cool morning, you want to take a walk in the garden, but you find an inexplicable amount of feces and claw marks of different lengths on the deck, so you have to clean it. 2. On a sunny afternoon, you are sitting on a chair on the deck, and suddenly a small furry animal jumps out and darts away from your feet, scaring you so much that you scream. Soft and furry doesn't always mean cute, and that's something to be aware of when it comes to that WPC decking or even garden you've put a lot of effort into creating. So, to sum up, we conclude that critters can ruin your outdoor decking, even though they look cute and funny. In the eyes of animals, there is no issue of garden ownership. Everything is a gift from nature. We can neither watch our carefully crafted decks being destroyed, nor can we be too cruel to these little guys. So, how do we protect our gardens?   Animals on deck   What harm can small animals do to your floors? Some people may think that little animals are so cute, what can they do wrong? So, first we need to figure out what kind of damage these little guys will cause to our WPC decking.  Scratching: Animals such as feral cats, wild dogs or small mammals may scratch outdoor flooring surfaces, especially if the flooring material is soft or easily damaged. Their claws can cause scratches, peeling, or cracking.  Gnaw: The teeth of many rodents grow indefinitely, and they need to constantly chew on everything in sight to prevent their teeth from growing too long and affecting their ability to eat.  Digging: Some animals, such as rodents, rabbits, or birds, may try to burrow under outdoor floors or chew on flooring materials. This can cause flooring materials to loosen, break, or deform.  Excrement: Animal waste, such as urine or feces, on outdoor floors can cause corrosion, discoloration or odor issues on flooring materials. Certain fecal matter may also cause the growth of bacteria or mold.  Activity stress: Large animals, such as wild deer or cattle, can exert significant activity pressure, causing indentations, cracks, or deformations in some types of flooring.  Nesting: Some animals that hibernate in their habits like to hide or burrow under your deck, porch, or shed due to colder weather or the need for nesting in the spring.     Mouse's nest     Classification of threat levels       First, we need to classify their threat to decking into a level so that you can better respond when facing them.         CLASS ANIMALS HAZARD TYPE S Raccoons, opossums, prairie dogs, skunks, mice, chipmunks, otters, mice and other rodents Scratching, gnawing, digging, excrement, nest building A Wild deer, cow, bear Activity stress, scratching, excrement B Wild cats, wild dogs, hares Gnaw, excrement, scratching C Snake Nesting, excrement D Birds excrement         Raccoons, skunks, and most rodents:       We classify raccoons, skunks and most rodents as Level S, which is the level that poses the greatest threat to WPC decking.       If rodents like raccoons, skunks, and prairie dogs find their way into your garden, you may want to be wary. Not only do you have to pay attention to controlling the volume of your screams when encountering them, but you also have to beware of them completely destroying your WPC decking. They can cause up to 6 types of damage to the decking.       Small rodents will crawl on the decking and find a crack in your decking, open an opening, and build a nest underneath the decking. They destroy the foundation, leave droppings everywhere, and due to their ever-growing teeth, they must constantly chew on anything in sight, including your decking.   Wild Deer, Cows and Bears:       Five different species of deer live in North America. These include white-tailed deer, mule deer, caribou, elk and moose. Among them, the smallest of them, the white-tailed deer, can reach 300 pounds, while the largest, the moose, can reach an astonishing 1,600 pounds. The most common cattle can also reach over 2,000 pounds. The weight of these behemoths is concentrated on 4 small hooves. Just imagine how much pressure they will put on your decking when they move their bodies and take a leisurely walk on your WPC decking. If the wild deer happens to see itself in the glass door again and is frightened, it may be a disaster for your decking.         The same is true for bears. Not only are bears heavier, but they are also more destructive to decking. Their sharp claws can easily leave a mark on your decking. This seems to tell you, "The bears are here to visit."     Deers       Wild cats, wild dogs, hares:       These small mammals are the most common visitors to gardens, and they live in areas that overlap with humans. The smaller size of cats, dogs and hares means they can look for damage in the decking and amplify it.         They scratch and chew the decking and give birth to a litter of pups in a suitable location.         Snakes:         Snakes have the habit of hibernating, and they will look for a suitable place to take shelter from the cold as winter approaches. Their shape allows them to easily burrow under your WPC decking and lay eggs underneath.         Birds:       Birds are the animals that may pose the least threat to your decking among all common animals. They usually have degenerated bladders and large intestines, so they have no ability to control bowel movements and will leave excrement on your deck at any time. But other than that, birds will hardly cause any harm to your decking, so don’t worry too much.           Note: The above ranking only refers to the threats to your decking caused by small animals, and does not include threats to humans and other personal belongings.   How to keep animals off your floors? 1. Clean up plants and garbage promptly:       The biggest thing that attracts critters to your yard is an abundance of wildly growing plants. Once these critters discover these plants, especially near decks, they will swarm them.       These natural plants not only provide food for herbivores, but also provide shelter for all animals, and the remaining plant remains also provide nesting materials for some animals.       Therefore, timely lawn construction has become an essential behavior. The turf needs to be mowed when it reaches a height of 3 inches, which is high enough to provide a food source for many small animals and insects. Once insects become prevalent, they will attract more insect-eating carnivores to your garden and decking.       Don’t forget to dispose of lawn clippings, leaves and branches, and dispose of them together to prevent them from being used as nesting materials by small animals.       For those who enjoy decking and grilling, be aware of food and drink residue left on the deck. Leftover human food is a favorite of raccoons, cats, dogs and even bears. After the party is over, remember to clean up the deck, put all food remains into garbage bags and put them in the trash can with the lid closed, and also wipe up any soups and drinks on the deck, as necessary Please refer to our article "Clean the difference between WPC embossed decking and WPC straight decking." to solve the problem.   2. Set up barriers and repair loopholes:       Installing a fence is one of the most common ways to effectively keep animals out. Choose a fence of the appropriate height to prevent small animals from jumping over or crawling through.       Check yard boundaries and decking joints for possible entry points such as cracks, gaps, and open doors and windows. Seal and repair them to ensure there is not enough space for critters to enter.   3. Use sound and motion sensing devices:     Small animals are sensitive to sudden sounds and motion. Set up some sound devices in the yard, such as sprinklers, bells or speakers, which are triggered when small animals approach, creating noise or movement to make them feel uneasy and move away.   4. Use natural repellents:       Certain natural gases can drive away some small animals, such as certain plants, herbs and flowers that can repel wild cats; for example, the smells emitted by plants such as basil, thyme, mint and mosquito repellent have a certain deterrent effect on wild cats; peppermint oil, Chili powder, camphor flakes, and lemon peel will repel rodents.       Spray these products on areas where small animals may pass or stay, and they often don't like the smell.   5. Set up a humane trap       Special traps can be set for some small animals, such as rodents and wild cats. What is noteworthy about this method is purchasing reliable and professional equipment and ensuring your own safety. After all, a small animal trapped in a cage will fight to the death, regardless of whether you have any intention of harming it.       Place the trap in an area where rodents are most active, but make sure it is out of direct sunlight as trapped pests may die from dehydration or heat stress.       Please be aware that when dealing with animals, respect and consider the welfare of the animals. Avoid using abusive, cruel or inhumane methods to solve problems and instead seek to humanely resolve situations where animals get under floors.       Trap   6.
